Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA)

The RMCA is a Belgian multidisciplinary scientific institute with a special focus on Central Africa. With solid capacity (research and collections) in both Human and Natural sciences, the research is organized through three Departments: Human Sciences, Earth Sciences and Biology. The RMCA has field research activities in more than 20 African countries, and its scientific work is enhanced through development collaboration actions in Africa that directly lead to strengthening national research capacities in several African countries.

Olivier Dewitte is a physical geographer and senior scientist at the Department of Earth Sciences of RMCA. For more information, please visit his personal website.

Philippe Trefois is a geological engineer and senior scientist at the Department of Earth Sciences of RMCA. For more information, please visit his personal website

University of Leuven (KU Leuven)

The main mission of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is to carry out state-of-the-art scientific research with respect to the functioning of geo- and ecosystems at different spatial and temporal scales, including the interaction between humans and the environment and the sustainable management of natural resources. The department aims at providing attractive academic training at an international level in the fields of Bio-engineering, Geology, Geography and Tourism. The department aims at making an important contribution to the scientific understanding of societal issues such as environmental pollution, food production, climate change, nature and landscape management, soil and water management, exploitation of underground resources, rural and urban development, international development collaboration and tourism.

Vrije Universiteit Brussel

A recent research effort in the department of physical geography is orientated towards landslides in developing countries, modelling the spatial distribution of hazards, and studying the impact and remediation strategies for local populations. A growing attention is also paid to the perception and adaptation of population to geohazards.  Research approaches involve combining remote sensing and field observations with scaled quantitative analogue models and application of existing numerical models.
